Each year the museum presents a Freedom Award to an individual whose achievements in the struggle for civil rights have laid the foun dation for achieving global freedom. For 2001, Nelson Mandela was the honored recipient. Reaching Out to Focus: Hope Automakers and suppliers have contributed nearly one- third of the $60 million raised so far for Focus: Hope, a Detroit community outreach organization that trains urban youth for jobs in the auto industry. The organization hopes to raise $75 million by September 2002. General Motors Corp., Ford M otor Co. and DaimlerChrysler Corp, are contributing a combined $11.5 million, while suppliers already have pledged $5.7 million. The competition is a new component of the Stellar Gospel Music Awards. The workshop competition was held in conjunction with the 16th annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards, to offer young gospel vocalists aged 14-19 an opportunity to improve their vocal skills through voice and music instruction, meet and interact with top gospel performers, showcase their talent and win scholarships.
